LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children in the context of child restraints. Despite the fact that automotive safety belts can be used to properly install kid restraints, LATCH was created to make the process more convenient. Safety belts or lower anchors must always be used to secure forward-facing restraints.

The top tether keeps the child’s seat from moving forward in the event of a collision. The IIHS study demonstrates that when LATCH is used, you are more likely to install the child restraints correctly, despite the fact that some LATCHs are complex.

Child safety seats are more likely to be installed correctly if the car's hardware satisfies certain specifications. A grading system for LATCH was established by the institute in 2015 in order to encourage automakers to provide LATCH gear that satisfies these ease-of-use standards. By doing this, they hoped to assure uniformity in the safety fixtures and reduce the likelihood of an installation failure.
